Escape R

It's best to eat when you have the opportunity and the appetite. You step into the 24/7 convenience store/gas station and grab yourself a day old submarine sandwich for half price and a manufactured tea for twice the price of the sandwich.

You give the clerk three and she gives you change. You ask her if there are any decent hotels around here and she suggests the Sunshine up the street. You thank her kindly and exit the convenience store, already starting remove the clinging plastic wrap from the bread. You look quickly around and begin to tear into your sandwich.

As you walk in the direction of the suggested lodging, you start to read the ingredients listed on the back of the tea bottle. It’s an old habit that you shared with your wife. Claudia used to say everything that comes in a bottle contains high fructose corn syrup. So far she hasn't been wrong.

Low fructose corn syrup, it reads. You don't see any high fructose corn syrup. You almost think that she has finally been proven wrong but figure that she would just alter her point slightly so that it would sound like she had been right all along. "What I said was," She would say, "Anything that comes in a bottle contains fructose corn syrup; I never said anything about high fructose corn syrup. It just so happens that high fructose corn syrup is more common than low fructose corn syrup."

There was no arguing with her, she could always find a way to be right. Even in death, she wins the arguments. You smile bitterly at this thought and stare up at the glowing yellow sign above a run down little hotel. You take another bite from your sandwich consider whether your willing to pay for a night in this run-down hotel.
