War of the Gods
You lean back against a tree, and close your eyes. Your sleep is light and troubled, and there is always the sense of the death curse there at the edge of your soul, ready to claim you should you grow weak enough.
By the time the eastern sky has turned silver-grey to announce the approaching dawn, you have dozed off due to sheer fatigue. In your dreams are the sounds of rushing wings and whispering feathers. You find yourself walking up to that winged woman, but this time, her back is turned to you, and her golden wings hide her figure from view. You reach out to her, to make her take notice of you, but before you can touch the shimmering feathers, the woman turns to look at you.
You flinch back, as her face is not the face of a stranger, but of someone else, whose clear eyes lock with your own.
-Salwi?!-
You stumble out of the dream, your heart racing and your body covered in cold sweat. Before you know it, you have flipped to your feet, wide-eyed and with your hand at your sword. Your eyes dart around, desperately trying to seek any movements in the morning fog that hangs between the trees. But there are none, and you slowly come to your senses. It had only been a nightmare. Salwi is not there beside you. You can't protect her anymore, and you simply let your hands drop.
-You cannot protect her, just like you could not save her back then, and you cannot bring her back from the dead, so chase away the mind-ghosts before you become insane.-
Shivering, now feeling cold and faint, you sit down again against the tree, though you have no intention of going back to sleep. -Salwi...- You have not seen her so vividly in your mind or your dreams for a long time. The winged woman must have reminded your soul of her, though you were not aware of it at the time.
So caught up in your thoughts are you that it takes quite a while for you to realise that there is someone, or something, running towards you.
What are you going to do?
