War of the Gods
You can't deny that you're curious about the Feng Ji race - a race of human-phoenix halfbreeds? Does that mean that Akaihane can take phoenix form?
That would explain the sound of rushing wings that you heard when Akaihane pulled your sword out of your hands.
"So how did the Feng Ji race come into being?" you ask.
Akaihane glances sideways at you, and shrugs slightly. "Well, no one knows for certain," he answers. "Though there is a legend of the impossible love between a phoenix and a human... Separated by their different shapes, their love could not be granted, though they stayed by each others' side..."
"Go on," you urge Akaihane as he falls silent, wanting to hear this.
Akaihane blinks at you, as though wondering why you're so interested in hearing this story. However, he does continue: "One day, a raging dragon rampaged through the land, destroying everything in its wake. The two tried to stop the dragon from destroying the human's village, but the dragon tossed them aside without even stopping. The human died from his wounds, and the phoenix used the last of her dying soul trying to revive him. It is impossible for a phoenix to revive somone killed by a dragon, but the legend says that the phoenix's soul connected to the human's, and they formed a huge egg. When the egg hatched, the first Feng Ji was born."
-A dragon...?- As Akaihane was speaking, you experienced a brief fragment of memory - of an orange dragon flying gracefully through the air. There was also the feeling that you know the dragon...
Then, you blink as some of Akaihane's words register in your mind. -Reviving...?- "Phoenixes have the ability to revive the dead?" you ask out loud.
Akaihane nods once, looking rather grim. "Dark wizards have been hunting them to gain their powers of immortality," he explains.
-Ohril...?- you wonder. But the god of Evil had given the wizard virtual immortality when he began serving him, if the information now inside your head makes any kind of sense. -Why would Ohril want phoenixes...?-
Of course, it is altogether possible that the dark wizards might be different ones... But you can't shake the thought of Ohril.
Though you'd really prefer not to talk about it further.
