Molly's Key MA

“Where are you going?” the voice startled her, and Molly stopped before she remembered how determined she was to put space between her and all the people of the village.

“Home,” Molly said, and the word sounded so good to her ears, that she just had to take a moment to enjoy it. She glanced at the nude man beside her. His face seemed to fall.

“I was hoping you would go with me,” he said softly, looking back at the village. His chocolate eyes reflected more sincere sorrow than any she had ever seen.

Molly frowned at him, not understanding what he meant. “You mean to say you want to go with me?”

He smiled sadly and shook his head. “I mean to say I want you to help me save them.”

Molly’s eyes followed his down to the picture perfect village from where she stood there was no sign of the horrors of the night. In fact as she watched, a couple came giggling up the hill touching each other and running playfully out of reach. It was as if the events of the previous night had never happened.

Molly nibbled on her lip and looked at the man beside her- Flute Boy she had dubbed him, and now she found herself wondering what his real name was. That thought meant she was considering staying in this place. He was solemn where the others were recklessly giddy. She wondered who he had lost in the past, and if that was why he was alone on the hillside when she first discovered him.

“Say yes, Molly.” He urged and his lips were more compelling than his eyes had been. She did indeed want to say yes. “I beg you say yes.”

“What will we do?” Molly asked, and watched as shoulders she hadn’t realized were tense drooped in relief. His lovely face flashed the brightest smile she had ever seen. He reached forward excitedly and hugged her. Molly felt his warm skin against her pajamas and wondered if she should ask to go back for clothes. Deciding he wouldn’t understand she let the thought go and stepped out of the embrace.

“We will tell the others, some may come with us, but it is dangerous so most will refuse.” He said and turned around to run down the hill. Molly had been hoping for a little more information on what they would do in the long run not just temporarily.

She refused to follow him down the hill to that godforsaken little town. Instead she sat in the grass and twirled strands around her index finger. Red came dashing up the hill and for a moment she considered ducking down so that the girl would miss her. She suspected though that Red was intentionally seeking her out.

“Is it true?” Red blurted from a distance of three yards.

“Is what true?” Molly inquired though she was afraid she already knew.

“Are you going with Brennus?” she asked gesturing with a delicately formed hand to the village. “He’s telling everyone that he’s taking you to Him.”

“The boy with the flute?” Molly asked just to be clear.

“Yes. Are you going with him?” she asked again.

“I suppose I am.” Molly said.

Red seemed to consider this a moment before responding to the news.
