Molly's Key MA

Molly watched the man go from calm interest to panic. His screams echoed loudly through the house. His hands went to his head and he began pulling fistfuls of hair. Tears ran down his cheeks as he backed toward the hallway a shrill sniveling sound coming from his parted lips. Molly didn’t think he was aware of what he was doing. She followed his eyes to the window. It was full dark out, except a distant hint of street light which was flickering unreliably.

Taking her chance, Molly began to dial frantically she would call the police, and let them handle the guy. She didn’t have time or inclination to do it. Bravely she stalked to the window and pulled the curtains closed. As she walked, she dialed the numbers she had been taught at age four 9-1-1.

The man stayed pitifully huddled in her hallway, his eyes covered and his lips moving helplessly. He didn’t look anything like the strong figure she had seen basking in the pool earlier. He seemed a shell of his former self. She sat watching him until the sound of sirens came whirring into her awareness. She had tried speaking to him, but after his screams had calmed he had become silent. She took a sniff, and the stench of urine hit her like a train. She gagged, and moved to open the door.

The man’s screams began before she had even fully opened the door, and his hand pressed it back into place. He was strong, and suddenly she was the one afraid. His eyes were wild like a mad man’s, and his head shook back and forth as he mouthed the word “no” again and again. Molly could see the light of the vehicles outside shining through the fabric of her curtains, and she was comforted slightly.

Her tongue darted out between suddenly dried lips, and she backed into the dining room. She had a few choices…
