Secrets of the Night
The pairs plan went off without a hitch. They climbed up and through the building to the space they supposed was part of the FCF. When they began to delve down however, they came into contact with a sheet of metal, it wasnt thick, and Brenna thought it looked like sterling silver. She forced through it with a knife and could see a small circle of the room below.
Increased hearing? a man asked in a flat tone.
Yes, I feel more alive than ever. Jasons voice confided.
Hows your appetite?
Im constantly hungry, but its different, its like it burns not to eat.
Brenna looked around the room as much as she could through the hole and found Jason a bed beneath the window. A man stood beside Jason taking notes. Jason glanced up toward the hole, but didnt give away her location. The man continued taking notes and jotting things down.
When may I go home? Ive had a broken arm before, and the rest of me is right as rain. Jason said this loudly perhaps to ensure she hear it.
Were still running tests on you. You shouldnt have been able to survive an attack in the state you were in. Youve seen the pictures. You could be the person with the secrets of the universe locked inside. It sounds hokey to you I know, but look at it this way, someones gotta have magical DNA right? the man made light of it, but Jasons eyes reflected that he didnt believe a word of it. Im going to get you some dinner, fancy a steak?
Mmmm, definitely! Jason said enthusiastically.
As soon as the man left, Jason crawled to the end of his bed, and looked at the hole. He smiled and waved and put his hands on his head and wagged his fingers. He didnt speak to her though and she wondered why. Finally he put a finger over his lips and pointed to another point in the room. His last gesture was to pinch his nose and wave his other hand in front of it the international stinky symbol.
Do you smell that? a mans voice asked, I smell flowers.
Brenna saw Jasons eyes widen slightly. He wasnt the only one with heightened senses. I dont smell anything.
Smells like a girl to me. I could handle a girl about now ya know? the mans gravely voice laughed at his testosterone driven joke. Brenna didnt get it.
They wont let a girl near us, they think we are wolves. Jason said. Werewolves I heard one of the doctors say lycanthropy and he was serious.
Well Ill be, the other man said.
Brenna heard a grating sound like gears kicking into place. She looked around and saw something else come through the wall. Apparently she wasnt the only one that wanted in tonight, and someone else had taken the straight up two stories approach. She looked as a swarm of muscular men came in.
Well, Ill be, the other patient said again. Come to rescue me after all.
When he moved toward the wall of windows she could see he was a big burly man with a scraggly beard. Lets go kid, one of the intruders ordered Jason. He looked at the hole in the wall for a moment deciding if he should stay or go. If you stay youll never see another moon.
Brenna watched Jason choose to leave with them while he had the chance. She watched his back disappear from the window ledge. There wasnt a scream when he hit the ground. She assumed they had set up a firemans net. Brenna shimmied back out of the ducts wondering what she had learned and how to interpret it.
