The woman with the key tied round her neck led Charles away from the entry way and past the front parlor. Charles felt a tingle of excitement course through his body. He was being taken into the very bowels of the place, where he assumed he would be given his choice of fair maidens. “Why did you accept the invitation?” she asked. Charles blinked, unsure how to answer the woman. She studied him intently. After a long moment of silence, during which he still offered no further response, the woman reached up and unclasped the chain that held the key to her skin. “I hope you know what you’ve accepted.” She paused and held the key above Charles’ empty palm. “I’m not sure you belong here. Keep the key, it might come in handy.”
Charles accepted the gift and placed it in his pocket. “Thank you.” He felt embarrassed that his inability to fit in had followed him into this place where all the women were lush and nearly naked and ready for things he had always dreamed of in secret. He cleared his throat, and submitted to the even greater humiliation of asking this question: “What do I do now?”
The woman looked kindly at him, and she waved her hand. “You can go anywhere here you like. You’ll find something for you in each of the rooms. We passed the stairs a few moments ago, if you go up, there are two more levels for you.”
Charles looked around, he was in a hallway lined with doors. There were five doors on each side of the hall, and one large door at the far end. Charles assessed the situation trying to decide which door he should venture into.
