When Charles woke, he was alone. He knew it instantly, and he mourned the loss of his companion. Charles threw his leg off the side of the settee/ His foot hit something glass on the floor, and whatever it was broke. Charles looked down to see what damage he had caused, and he hoped he would be able to afford it. Beneath his foot was a doll. It might have been a pretty doll once, but now it’s face was shattered, and the hollow of its head filled with glass.

Charles set the doll on the table it felt like the right thing to do. After all, the doll probably had belonged to his lover, and he really didn’t want to upset her, even if she had left him alone. Charles heard a growl, and remembered the yappy dog that had greeted him upon entrance to the room. With a sigh, Charles stuffed himself back into his pants, and got ready to leave the room.

The growl was deeper than he would have expected, the realization came to Charles belatedly. He turned to look, and found a huge beast covered in fur pacing before the door. Worse than that, the animal looked exceptionally angry. Charles stood up, and focused on how he might escape.
