Odalisque Paradise
Charles arranged his limbs in a runner’s pose. He hadn’t had much cause to run in life, and he wasn’t sure he could make it. Before he could talk himself out of it, Charles moved forward pushing himself hard for the exit.
Charles felt a tendon snap as the dog’s jaw closed round his ankle. His fingers locked around the doorknob at the same moment. Charles scrambled out into the hallway. He pulled his leg hard trying to get it out of the mouth of the beast. The thing looked as if it might follow him out, but the moment it crossed the door, the dog turned to dust.
Charles looked down at his leg, which was covered in dust and blood from the bite he had received. Gingerly he got up and walked toward the entrance, his gimp leg trailing behind him.
The women that had met him in the entryway were gone, but as Charles looked around he saw that many of the men still remained. His eyes cautiously trailed over the frame of the nearest man, and he realized with a jolt that the man was dead.
