Of Stones and Stars
Chapter 8:The other stone
The blue star god did its best to comfort me the next day, but I was on edge from the moment I woke up. I ate my breakfast quickly and headed for school, straying from my standard route and cutting through various yards and side streets.
I wouldnt say I was scared necessarily; the blue stone made sure of that, but I was certainly not at ease. I wasnt taking any chances. If this wielder of the red stone knew the route I took to school in the morning, I fully intended on taking an alternate route.
Eventually I found myself at the doors of the school, standing among the masses as we waited for the doors to be opened. I glanced around nervously several times, keeping an eye out for new faces.
Ryan stepped forward from the crowd to greet and converse with me, but I was too distracted to pay him much attention. I nodded along to whatever he said and kept a watchful eye on the crowd.
As I looked around for unfamiliar faces I began to wonder if I would even notice the person if they had arrived I hoped the stones would warn me; would point the person out to me, but I had no way of being certain. What if they were still upset about the other day when I left them at home in the drawer beside my bed? What if they were looking forward to a new owner? Would I even survive the day? I could only hope that they understood how much I wanted to maintain contact; and pray that it would be enough to satisfy them.
At last the doors were opened and I pushed my way to the front of the crowd so that I could be inside sooner. Somehow I felt that I would be safer inside the school. I figured that someone who wasnt familiar with the layout would be running into a virtual maze when searching for me and my familiarity with the halls could only serve as an advantage. I hoped so, anyhow.
I was distracted throughout the day; the classes just dragged on. I found myself tensing up at nearly everything; someone reaching into their book bag, someone standing up, knocks at the classroom doors; everything. Each time the bell rang I raced to the next class, not wishing to encounter the enemy in the halls; preferring to stay as hidden and out of the way as possible.
When the final bell rang I stood and walked out of my last class. As I stepped through the glass doors I realized that any advantage I thought I had was lost. I was completely exposed as I took to the sidewalk and started on my journey home.
I followed a similar route home from school as I took to school that morning; not the same route, mind you; just a similar route. What I mean is, I cut through various backyards, and took almost random side streets. I went a little out of my way here and there, but that didnt seem like such a big deal when I thought about the potential consequences of running into the other stone wielder.
Turns out my diversionary tactics were completely unnecessary. As I cut through a neighbors backyard, my house within eyesight, I noticed a strange car parked on the road in front of my house. Approaching the house from the back, I decided to stay back there out of sight from whoever was in the car.
My mother wasnt home and I found myself desperately wishing that she stayed home more often. I stood back there with my back to the aluminum siding, wracking my brain as I tried to figure out how I was going to get around this. It took some time before I realized that I needed to stop trying to avoid the problem and just face it.
After taking a deep breath, I made my way around the house and to the front yard where I could clearly see the car. As I stepped into the front yard, the door opened and out stepped a stunning red haired women with a body to die for. Everything about her was undeniably and irresistable sexy.
She looked vaguely familiar; I had the sensation that I should definately know who she is, but I couldn't seem to place her.
