The green dragon of earth flew over the mountains, her tired wings and body aching. Still, she flew on. There would be time enough to rest later.
When she and her child were safe.
The dragon rested for a moment on the air currents, turning her head from one side to the other. There. She could see it now. Hidden from all but dragon sight, there was a cave in the mountains.
One of the last sanctuaries for their kind...
She flapped her wings a few times, and then soared into the cave, collapsing almost as soon as she was in there - though she had enough presence of mind not to fall on the precious egg she carried.
The others were all there already. The last of their kind. The blue air dragon, the turquoise water dragon, the golden light dragon, the orange fire dragon.
And now her - the green earth dragon.
The dragons didn't speak. They each knew what they had to do, and speaking would waste precious energy that they needed.
The green dragon carefully nosed her egg to lie with the others after giving it a loving nuzzle. Then, copying the others, she lowered her head so that her nose was touching each of the others.
At the same time, each called on the last of their power. Elemental light filled the cave, and when it had faded, the eggs were gone - just like the eggs the male dragons had taken would have now.
The five female dragons collapsed, lifeless, as the last of their life force left them.
